I flip on the lights. Nowhere to hide in this cabin. There’s no space between the bed frame and floor, no trap door in the bathroom, nothing she could hide behind. I pull up my pants and hastily do my buckle before storming outside, slipping into my boots on my way out. My dry eyes scan the vista before me. The moonlight shimmers on the azure lake water and from the trees a single owl reminds me I’m in the forest. Across the lake, a full half-mile away, a few of the Duluth crew sit in folding chairs around a bonfire, talking about insurance or accounting or whatever work they’re involved in. A few shrieking kids run around in the clearing, goaded on by men with beer cans while their wives scold from their cottage porches. I watch the scene for a while. No wonder they call this place Quaint Lake.
